With all of this in mind, Ormsby's presents a security checklist. See if you are doing all that you can to maintain your machines secure.
Security Checklist
  • Purchase leading anti-virus software that will scan mail messages and new files automatically.
  • Update virus definitions weekly (or automatically).
  • Scan hard drives for viri monthly.
  • Scan external media that has been used on other systems.
  • Do not open email attachments if you don't know the sender.
  • Do not open EXE, BAT, VBS OR SCR type attachments.
  • Scan attachments manually with anti-virus software if the attachment must be opened.
  • Open scanned attachments from within the program (ie .doc files from Word or WordPad).
  • Do not use a web based email system for communicating sensitive information.
  • Install a firewall (either small external appliance or software) on any system that has a permanent connection to the Internet.
  • Turn off Windows file sharing.
  • Stay informed with the latest security news (see sidebar)
  • Perform system updates regularly.
  • Use lower risk formats like RTF or text files to exchange documents.
  • Backup regularly onto CD, Zip, or tape.
  • Create an emergency boot disk and keep it in a safe place.
  • Use effective passwords.
  • Do not use the operating system's administrator mode for routine activities.
